About the project
Rotor Command is a top-down action game in the spirit of the classic arcade helicopter games. You fly Eagle One over jungle and river delta, and aiming is separate from flying – you shoot where you aim, not where the nose points.
The day after it was published, the game became the foundation for Rotor Assault, which added a tank and tactical missions. What sets Rotor Command apart is its mission structure: the jungle islands, the convoys, the hostages and the fortress. That is the part that could find its way back into the main game or become the basis for a sequel of its own.
Current state
What works
- Three missions – Training Grounds, Jungle Island and River Assault – that end at a guarded fortress
- Convoys to stop, anti-aircraft guns to take out and hostages to winch up and fly home
- Cannon, rockets and homing missiles, with fuel, armour and ammunition to keep an eye on
- Rescued crew give bonuses; best score, time and medal are saved per mission
- Fully remappable keyboard, mouse, touch and gamepad
- Voiced radio chatter, music that follows the action and original graphics
- 79 commits and 37 test files, with a bot that plays through the missions
What isn’t finished
- Helicopter only – the tank and the tactical missions are in Rotor Assault
- More missions and a shared leaderboard are on the roadmap but not built
- No service worker, so the game can't be played offline
Why is this project on BSite?
- Not actively maintained right now
Rotor Command works and is playable from start to finish, but development continued in the fork Rotor Assault on EverydayGames – with a tank, three tactical missions and offline play. Two near-identical helicopter games on the same portal compete with each other. Still, Rotor Command has a mission structure of its own that is worth keeping, so it is paused rather than archived.
