About the project

Swarm Bastion puts you in a mech guarding a bastion against waves of mechanical enemies. Two rotary cannons do the work but overheat if you hold the trigger too long, so the fight is a rhythm of bursts, cooling and the four abilities.

Between waves you place barricades and auto-turrets and buy upgrades; two AI allies fight alongside you. Five waves build towards the Hive Tyrant, with up to 512 enemies on screen at once.

It is built in Unity 6 with the Universal Render Pipeline, C# and UI Toolkit, and the scenes are generated procedurally. It is also the reference project for the next Unity games.

Current state

What works

  • Third-person mech defence against swarms of up to 512 mechanical enemies – three enemy types plus the Hive Tyrant boss
  • Twin rotary cannons with overheating, two AI allies, barricades and auto-turrets, and four abilities
  • Upgrades between waves, five waves and a boss fight
  • Sound effects and voice generated with ElevenLabs
  • 60 FPS in desktop Chrome even at 512 enemies
  • The first Unity game in the ecosystem, and the reference for future Unity games

What isn’t finished

  • No touch or gamepad support in the UI – keyboard and mouse only (a gamepad is mapped but untested)
  • Not tested on phones, Firefox, Safari or integrated GPUs
  • A download of about 14 MB before the game starts
  • Primitive 3D art – the meshes are generated procedurally
  • No music
  • Not yet play-tested widely

Why is this project on BSite?

  • Early prototype
  • Features are not complete yet

Swarm Bastion is the first Unity WebGL build in the ecosystem, so load time, memory use and frame rate have to be proven on ordinary machines before it can carry the EverydayGames brand. It lives here while that is tested and the touch and gamepad controls are added.

Screenshots

  • The Hive Tyrant boss towering over the bastion while the mech and its allies fire at it.
  • The preparation phase between waves, with barricades and auto-turrets being placed and upgrades on offer.

Development log

  1. Published in the lab at bsite.se/play/swarm-bastion/ as a Unity 6 WebGL build with procedurally generated scenes.
