FutureNest

See how much a fund fee eats into long-term savings – in kronor, as a share of the final value and in years of saving. A single view, more feature than app.

Opens at everydayapps.se/app/futurenest/

FutureNest with SEK 5,000 a month for 30 years at an 8 per cent return and a 1.5 per cent fee – a final value of SEK 5,267,870 and fees costing SEK 1,820,196.

About the project

FutureNest makes an abstract percentage concrete. One and a half per cent a year in fees sounds like very little, but over thirty years it can add up to a third of the final value – and you only see it once the area between the curves is filled in.

The calculation would fit well as part of a larger savings app. If you want help with everyday saving, there is Småspararen (Swedish for “the small saver”) on EverydayApps.

Current state

What works

  • A chart of the savings with and without the fee, with the difference shaded
  • The fee in kronor, as a share of the final value and as years of saving
  • Three profiles to compare – a global index fund, an actively managed fund and a savings account
  • Sliders for amount, horizon, return and fee that recalculate instantly

What isn’t finished

  • A single view – you can't save, compare your own scenarios or share a calculation
  • No account taken of tax, inflation or contributions that change over time
  • Built as a single file without tests

Why is this project on BSite?

  • Features are not complete yet

FutureNest shows one thing clearly – what the fee costs over time – but it is a feature rather than a full app. EverydayApps has Småspararen, which takes a broader look at everyday saving. FutureNest stays here as a prototype until the calculation finds a bigger context.

Screenshots

  • The same savings with the fee raised to 2 per cent – the final value drops to SEK 4,790,160 and the fee costs SEK 2,297,906, the equivalent of 38.3 years of saving.

Development log

  1. Moved to BSite. The app stays at the same address, everydayapps.se/app/futurenest/.

  2. Got an install button in the app's own interface.

  3. Built as a single HTML file from a mockup.
