About the project

Baltic Catch is a small, calm fishing game: steer the rowing boat, drop the line to the right depth and reel in the fish before the seal gets there first. No clock and no ending – you fish until you stop.

The game was written as a single HTML file with no dependencies, which made it quick to build but hard to grow from. Once the idea proved itself, the sequel was built from scratch instead.

Current state

What the project got to be

  • Six species from roach to sea trout, with rarer fish swimming deeper
  • The bite as a mini-game of its own, with a meter to fill
  • A hard level where the fish dart sideways and have to be met
  • Best score per difficulty, saved in the browser
  • Keyboard and touch, including a phone held upright

What never got finished

  • No shared leaderboard – that only arrived with Baltic Catch 2
  • No progression or new waters beyond the first lake
  • Built as a single file without modules, hard to build on

Why is this project on BSite?

  • Replaced by a newer project

Baltic Catch was the prototype that proved the fishing idea had legs. Everything good about it lives on in Baltic Catch 2 – with a server leaderboard, more systems and a proper codebase. The original stays here as the first version of an idea that grew.

Screenshots

  • The start screen with instructions for steering, bites and the seal, best scores for Easy and Hard, and the button that starts the fishing.
  • The bite mini-game – a meter telling you a pike is biting and to press now, with a shoal of fish around the line.
  • The hook down at the bottom next to an open treasure chest, with zander and perch in the dark deep water.

Development log
